Areas of Special Competence
Emily’s training and skill is in urban planning, public health and social justice. She draws from years of experience applying planning principles in these multiple capacities in Hawai‘i and California. Having recently moved home to Hawai‘i, she looks forward to impacting change, and is passionate about fostering collaboration and approaching urban planning in a manner that is interdisciplinary, conscious, and intersectional.
Emily’s experience in Hawai‘i includes work at the Hawai‘i Legislature and a Native Hawaiian consulting firm. These experiences allowed her to work with and for traditionally marginalized communities, which were often confronted with dilemmas presented by urban planning projects. In California, she built up the foundation of her formal planning professional and academic career. Her experience in California includes work at a city planning department, an environmental planning firm and a community development organization focusing on informal economies. Her main objective in California was to be exposed to as many aspects of the planning profession through internships, an experience which helped her to her mature as a planner while finishing her graduate degree.
After being gone from home for six long years, Emily hopes to spend every spare moment hiking or in the ocean.
