HHF Planners began the year by promoting staff members Gene Yong, Tomoko Naka, Jerilyn Hanohano, and Stephanie Tatakoth to Senior Associate, Shelley Franklin to Associate, and Michael Lim and Oliver Gaskell to Senior Planner. The promotions reflect the significant contribution of these individuals to the firm and attest to HHF’s commitment to growing future leaders who will ensure that the firm stays relevant to another generation of planners and clients.
Gene Yong, AICP
Over Gene Yong’s 30-year planning career, he has built and maintained a wide network of relationships with industry colleagues, institutional clients, and the local planning community in Hawai‘i. In his first 18 months at HHF, Gene’s ability to quickly assess and identify issues, his outside-the-box approach to problem solving, his unflappability in managing complex and quickly moving situations, and his skill at business development make him an asset to the firm.
Tomoko Naka, Landscape Architect, ASLA, LEED Green Associate
Tomoko Naka has 18 years of design experience. Her exceptional landscape designs and project management ability have helped to establish HHF’s reputation as a leader in high-end commercial and up-scale residential landscape architecture. Tomoko’s high level of professionalism and the thought, care, and skill in each of her designs has garnered her awards, magazine covers, and a loyal client base.
Jerilyn Hanohano, AICP
Jerilyn Hanohano has 17 years of planning and design experience and has spent the past 8 years at HHF. Strengthened by her architectural background, she is a skilled military planner and has managed many complex assignments involving high demands, tight deadlines, and large multidisciplinary teams, to award-winning finishes. Jerilyn is a natural leader at HHF, serving on professional organizations and in the community.
Stephanie Tatakoth has nearly two decades of accounting experience and has served as HHF’s accounting manager for the past 8 years. She leads the company forward with software transitions, streamlining accounting procedures, and most recently, adapting accounting practices for the firm’s transition to working from home. Stephanie is expert at solving all the accounting issues associated with running a firm that does business and has employees in Hawai‘i, California, and the U.S. Territories.
Shelley Franklin AICP, LEED AP BD+C ND
Shelley Franklin’s 16 years of planning and design experience include her time as an Air Force officer in Civil Engineering. At HHF, she has played a key role in several large planning assignments over the years and has special expertise in military facility planning and climate change and sustainability planning. Shelley demonstrates her commitment to sustainability through practice as HHF’s Sustainability Lead, through academic achievement, and as a member of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Northern California Chapter. She recently re-joined the firm full-time after completing a Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies degree in the field of sustainability from the Harvard University Extension School.
Michael Lim is an adept planner technician with 12 years of experience supporting a range of projects from master plans and entitlements to environmental review documents, GIS geodatabase development, and geoanalysis. He has specialized experience working on Navy and Marine Corps projects.
Oliver Gaskell, AICP Candidate
Oliver Gaskell joined HHF in the fall of 2020 and hit the ground running on Complete Streets projects in O‘ahu and on Maui. He also serves as a key team member on a large-scale facility master planning assignment in the U.S. Territories. Oliver has become a virtual engagement expert and helped orchestrate over a dozen large-scale, online community events for HHF this past year.
