Answer: a Flash Heart Bombing of Historic Honolulu!
On a recent afternoon, HHFers showed up at the corner of Merchant Street and Fort Street Mall with handwritten paper hearts to support the Historic Hawai‘i Foundation‘s heart bombing of just a few historic buildings in Downtown Honolulu. Heart Bombing was started in 2011 by Buffalo’s Young preservationists, to show love and appreciation for historic and culturally important buildings. The idea caught on, and over the past few years, has garnered the support of the National Trust for Historic Preservation which promotes the heart bombings through a special hashtag, every February. We’ve put together a few of our favorite pictures and videos from our local event, below. To see more from around the country, check out the hashtag #IHeartSavingPlaces

Historic preservation is not just about preserving historic buildings….it’s about preserving historic landscapes, too! The award-winning Fort Kamehameha Cultural Landscape Assessment and Interpretive Trail are examples of work that HHF has done for large landowners, such as the Navy, to capture an important landscape’s historic and present condition. The firm has also provided State, City and County, and private organizations with environmental permitting services in support of the restoration of Native Hawaiian landscapes such as Kahalu‘u Ma Kai Educational and Cultural Center on Hawai‘i Island and Kawainui Hāmākua Marsh on O‘ahu.
