HHF Planners (HHF) helped develop the landscape treatment for the renovation of the historic IBM Building located in Honolulu, under the direction of landscape architects, Surface Design Inc. The iconic building with Web-IBM-Bldg_Awardits distinctive grille facade was designed by famed local architect Vladimir Ossipoff in 1962 and is currently owned by The Howard Hughes Corporation and located within the Victoria Ward Village complex. The landscape renovation design honors the distinctive features of the building’s architecture and the site history, re-purposing the iconic building for a new era.
HHF’s landscape design, done in coordination with Surface Design Inc, recognizes the culture and ecosystem of Hawai‘i in the sensitive and appropriate use of plant materials. Surface Design’s hardscape and water feature elements reflect the patterns of the building, creating a harmonious connection between building and exterior spaces.
The landscape planting theme throughout the project is an expression of the desire of The Howard Hughes Corporation to honor the history and legacy of the Victoria Ward property. HHF Planner’s services included the production of landscape planting and irrigation construction drawings, plant material selection, and construction observation. A notable feature of the landscape design is the inclusion of a small native Hawaiian garden, with over 14 different species of native Hawaiian plants.
