This new science building at University of Hawai‘i Maui is a LEED Silver building intended to combine state-of-the-art instructional facilities with sustainable design practices. This facility continues implementation of the college’s Long-Range Development Plan, prepared by HHF in 2007. Because the project involves the use of State lands and funds, and because it is in the County’s Special Management Area, it required land use entitlements and compliance with the State’s environmental impact statement law (HRS Chapter 343).
HHF prepared an Environmental Assessment evaluating the potential impacts of the project. HHF also prepared applications for a Height Variance and a Special Management Area Use Permit from the County of Maui, and secured both entitlements in 2009. To support the project’s environmental and entitlement reviews, HHF conducted visual analyses of how the new building may appear from public vantage points.
