Working with Design Partners Incorporated (DPI), HHF prepared a Landscape Schematic Plan and Construction Drawing Package for a new Sasebo Elementary School educational facility, for the Pacific District of the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). The new Sasebo Elementary School will be constructed on a 1.24 hectares (3.1 acres) site on the Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo, Japan. The project included designing a visually appealing landscape that meets the functional and program requirements of the school and community within the framework of the 21st Century School design guidelines. Providing elements of 21st Century design including indoor-outdoor connections, outdoor learning areas, and environmental awareness and sustainability through roof gardening and rain harvesting of the site was a guiding force in the design of the landscape. The design effort also incorporated much of the existing Host Nation and Commander Fleet Activities cultural and historical appearance of the site. Challenges include working within a space restricted urban area. The project is seeking to achieve the standard of LEED Silver Certification, government validated.
