The Makiki Forest Recreation Area includes popular hiking trails through lush forests just a few minutes drive away from the dense urban area of central Honolulu Hawai‘i. The intention of the master plan was to improve the general entry of the Makiki Valley State Recreation Area, enhance the pedestrian connection from the parking lot to the trail head, and improve the parking lot function.
A site analysis was developed identifying the conditions and features along the existing entry roadway, the public parking area, the botanical trail, and the existing restroom facility and trail head pavilion area. A conceptual master plan and report document was developed illustrating proposed improvements.
Some of the goals of the master plan included the delineation of the public parking lot, the incorporation of native plants, enhancements to the existing trail design, the incorporation of additional trail linkages, fencing and barrier detailing, traffic control measures, location of direction signage, and improvements to vehicular circulation.
