Kapalua Coastal Trail Plan

Location

Kapalua, Maui, Hawai‘i

Client

Maui Land and Pineapple Company

HHF is part of the award-winning team that received the 2007 APA Hawai‘i Chapter’s Environmental/Preservation Award for the Kapalua Coastal Trail.

The trail is Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s vision for a major low-impact pedestrian route through some of West Maui’s most beautiful natural scenery. Stretching 3.5 miles along breathtaking coastline, the trail will link existing public shoreline access points; connect Kapalua Bay, Oneloa Bay, D. T. Fleming Beach, Mokulē‘ia Bay, and Honolua Bay; and become a key amenity for outdoor activity to be enjoyed by both Maui residents and visitors.

HHF was responsible for the design development of the conceptual trail plan. HHF planners and landscape architects/designers worked closely with Maui Land & Pineapple to adjust trail alignments based on a careful investigation of existing conditions; select and design path materials and trail furnishings—including signage and trail markers— to complement and reference the natural landscape and coastal setting; and prepare a report with an overall plan, segment plan enlargements, and details to illustrate and document the trail design.

HHF’s design development report became the basis for an environmental assessment, preliminary agency consultation, and future construction design.
