The Shidler Group

To create the award-winning new entry plaza for Davies Pacific Center, HHF Planners (HHF) drew inspiration from existing features at the prominent downtown location. The landmark “volcano” fountain on the corner of Bishop and Merchant Streets, formerly a lonely focal element in a “desert” of brick pavers, is now the centerpiece of a tropical oasis. The tapestry of new tall canopy shade trees and mature coconut palms shades the plaza and frames views to and from the building’s main entry and mezzanine lanai. Planting beds of colorful shrubs and ground cover are accented by low concrete curved seat walls that complement the distinctive detailing of the building. The careful staging of these entry plaza plantings creates layers of visual interest and a lush backdrop for outdoor activity.

The new entry plaza design and installation received the 2007 BIA Hawai‘i Landscape Division Grand Award.

HHF also designed new planting enhancements along Bishop, Queen, Alakea, and Merchant Streets that are integrated with existing mature trees and unify the perimeter of the building. New planters along Merchant Street create an outdoor café seating area for building tenant customers.

HHF has provided landscape design services for additional Shidler Group properties in Honolulu, including Waterfront Plaza, Clifford Center, the Pan Am Building, and the Pacific Business News Building.
