Marine Barracks Historic Preservation Plan

Location: Pearl Harbor Naval Complex, Oahu, Hawaii

Client: U.S. Navy, Pacific Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command

Helber Hastert & Fee prepared a plan to guide the redevelopment of the historic Marine Barracks located in the heart of the Pearl Harbor Naval Complex. The focus of the plan was eight wooden structures built in 1940 and 1941 to house and feed Marine Corps units stationed at Pearl Harbor prior to World War II. The study included a documentation of the history of the buildings, an analysis of the building’s structural and material condition, cost estimates for both the rehabilitation and replacement of the buildings, an economic life-cycle analysis comparing rehabilitation and replacement, and recommendations for short- and long-term improvements.
