Cartographic Realism

A method of cartographic realism was used to create a series of realistic looking base maps for different Hawaiian Islands. Satellite-derived land cover images were reclassified to better match the represented eco-types. The images were then draped over digital elevation models, creating small-scale photo-realistic 3D models of each island. The models can be rendered for either printed maps or animated and flown through.
