Larry E. Helber, ASLA

Larry E. HelberLarry Helber was, until recently, Chairman and Director of Helber Hastert & Fee, Planners. He now serves as an advisor and consultant to the firm.

During his 38 years as a professional planner, Mr. Helber's work experience has principally been in the areas of tourism master planning and resort destination planning and development. He has served as a Director or Project Planner for comprehensive tourism destination studies for the governments of the Republic of China, Australia, French Polynesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, India, El Salvador, Vanuatu, the Maldives, American Samoa, Guam, and the Philippines. He has also participated in the planning and economic feasibility analysis of over 100 major private resort developments in Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Japan, Fiji, Tahiti, Guam, American Samoa, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, the Philippines, The People's Republic of China, Okinawa, the New Hebrides, Puerto Rico, Saipan, Colombia, Peru, Belize, Chile, Brazil, Egypt, Spain, and the Republic of Bophuthatswana, South Africa.

In addition, Mr. Helber has been actively involved in the conceptual and detailed planning and implementation of many major resorts and recreational communities in the Hawaiian Islands. He has also had considerable experience in the master planning of multi-use projects centered around marinas and other major recreational facilities.

Mr. Helber is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the American Planning Association, and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA). He is a past member of PATA's Board of Directors, past chairman of its Development Authority, and the PATA Advisory Council. He has also served as a member of the architectural review committees of the Mauna Kea Beach, Ka'anapali Beach, and Keauhou-Kona resorts in the Hawaiian Islands.

For the past 36 years, Mr. Helber has been on the faculty of the University of Hawaii’s School of Travel Industry Management and its Executive Development Institute for Tourism, teaching courses on tourism and resort development. He is the co-author with Charles Kaiser of a book entitled Tourism Planning and Development and has spoken on the subject of tourism and resort planning and development at numerous tourism conferences and seminars in the Pacific Basin.
