Doris Duke Foundation of Islamic Art

The Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art (DDFIA) was established in the late 1990’s subsequent to the passing of Doris Duke. The DDFIA assumed ownership of Ms. Duke’s 5-acre estate, Shangri La. In her will Ms. Duke set aside Shangri La to serve as a center to appreciate Islamic Art and culture, consistent with the physical design of the estate.

Over the course of three years, HHF assisted DDFIA as a liaison to various State and County agencies to achieve clarity on prior-approved entitlements, and bring DDFIA in compliance with current environmental rules. In addition, HHF prepared an Environmental Assessment for a new on-site maintenance facility, pursuant to Chapter 343 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, the State Environmental Impact Law. HHF also made several public presentations for the new maintenance facility and was successful obtaining approval for a County Special Management Area (SMA) Use Permit, and a modification to a previously approved conditional use permit.
